Consider a shaft in a housing socket. The Shaft is made of steel and the housing socket Aluminium Alloy. Calculate the bearing stress on the shaft/socket.
The bearing stress from the FEA analysis was 75.62 MPa and this is close to the calculated bearing stress of 74 MPa.
Tip To find accurate bearing stress requires considerable analysis effort. Bearing stress rarely drives the design process and for this reason it is common practice to use average bearing stress which is simply force divided by area. A reserve factor is then applied.
Average Bearing Stress σaverage = F / A = 12000 / (20 x 20) = 30 MPa
